Himachal commissions more projects for hydropower

Shimla, despite environmental controversies due to the construction of hydropower projects, the State Government of Himachal Pradesh is aiming to commission more projects.

In an official statement, the government claimed it has identified hydropower potential of 27,436 MW in the state. Currently, the state is harnessing only 10,351 MW.

The leading agencies in the hydro power sector were identified as NTPC, NHPC, SJVNL, HPPCL and HPSEB Ltd. HP State Electricity Board has also commissioned 22 eco-friendly projects of an aggregate 300 MW capacity.

The government has identified locations on Beas, Ravi and Pabbar basins for more projects. The upcoming projects include World Bank funded 18 MW Raisan project in Kullu district on a pilot basis.

The list of upcoming projects also includes Devi Kothi, (16 MW), Sai Kothi-I (15 MW), Sai Kothi-II (16.50 MW) and Hael (18 MW) in Chamba district.

State Government said it has created a safety and quality control authority under the aegis of Directorate of Energy.
